At the centre of Vivek Patel’s work is the idea that the universe contains a creative energy, which is most accurately represented by music. In turn, music becomes the impetus for visual expression. The visual does not interpret the music; rather it is an imagined expression, which rests on the architecture established by the music. Four Plays uses Yo Yo Ma’s performance of a Johann Sebastian Bach composition and works with the idea of constructing a cello out of musical tones.
