For Flow, I shot several hours of videotape at various creeks and rivers in and around Austin, Texas. I wanted to capture the power and beauty of water, and explore how its behavior changed as the seasons progressed. To augment this imagery, I also painted on strips of clear 16mm and 35mm film leader. In doing so, I sought to recreate the visceral experience of immersing oneself in a body of water. I combined these elements in the computer, where I assembled, edited and digitally manipulated the video as it currently exists.
The soundtrack was composed by Austin-based musician Michael Vernusky and constructed predominantly from tam-tam cymbals and classical guitar. These sounds were manipulated using digital granular processing to evoke a constantly evolving, yet fixed texture. This audio track alternatively reflects and contrasts with the video imagery, further expanding the cinematic experience of Flow. |
