META_EPICS is the first in a series of new generative audiovisual works, resulting from research done over the last few years into new forms of spatial image and sound, Visual Music and Live Cinema. The result is an audiovisual story in four parts, generated and composed in real-time by two engines, without human mediation and without the use of pre-recorded material. We developed an entirely new soft- and hardware architecture, resulting in two engines with an associated communication protocol for a spatial image and sound environment with six speakers and one projection.
META_EPICS builds on research done earlier for works such as the FF series and Sessions.03. In the FF series research focused on algorithmic compositional systems and less attention was given to the image resolution and the sound quality. The cyclic compositions were produced with relatively simple image and sound generators. Date and time were used as variables in the compositional algorithm in such a way that they instigated continuing change without being entirely chaotic. These, in theory, infinite compositions show some similarities with phenomena and processes known from nature, such as tide movements and season changes without being mere illustrations of these phenomena and processes.
META_EPICS was developed in close collaboration with David Kiers (NL), and made possible with financial support of Dienst Kunst en Cultuur Rotterdam.
