Chromatic Wave Cantata combines the digital and analog; the scientific and poetic; American culture and Native American identity. The work incorporates painting and sound improvisation; experimental sounds and techniques; electronic and acoustic sounds; traditional Native American singing and percussion; and natural sounds taken from field recordings. Aleatory (or chance) elements are provided by the Sneakers of Samothrace, a wearable, computer instrument I invented in 2003. My extended sneaker instrument generates abstractions of sound, kinesis and color: As I move I blur, transmute and subvert the boundaries between disciplines. The temporal energy trail of my live paint is punctuated by visual color “samples” tied to MIDI numbers and sound samples. The Sneakers of Samothrace operate in an intermedia flux of dance, spoken word, music, theater, and graphic beauty. |
